Krzysztof Klimek | In search of a hidden order

On December 6, 2024, at 6 pm, an exhibition by Cracow painter Krzysztof Klimek opened at the BWA SOKOL Gallery.
In his landscapes Krzysztof Klimek does not coax the viewer with the charms of idyllic lands saturated with rainbow colors, as if from postcards from oriental travels. The landscapes he paints are frames taken out of Polish reality, which we used to call “gray.” However, when transferred to canvas, we discover in these vistas qualities hidden in everyday life - stemming not only from a sense of attachment to native surroundings, but also from the depth of nuances brought to light through the medium of paint and the compositions chosen by the author.
Klimek's landscapes are the result of hours of contemplation and diligent work in nature. They are a lesson in perseverance, for when leaving the familiar and safe studio, the painter faces fatigue, changing - sometimes oppressive - weather and lighting conditions. Perhaps that's why the paintings so perfectly capture the winter climate of southern Poland, anguished by smog and chaotic construction, undulating with hills and dotted with houses. There are far fewer spring or summer views in the artist's oeuvre - so the artist eschews easy visual and aesthetic “comfort” in favor of harsher, forcible or melancholy-inducing experiences.
The exhibition is based on the juxtaposition of realistic landscapes with the second strand of the painter's work - abstract works, which can be interpreted as an expression of the search for hidden order. The artist's minimalist, geometric compositions, sparing in colors, operating with broken whites, blacks and earth colors, seem to be parallel worlds, hiding under the cover of visible reality - like a perfect mathematical plan generating the field of our sensual empiricism. The different textures of paint make light and shadows further model the canvas, which, when observed from different angles, takes on new dimensions. Klimek's abstractions are the fruit of a thorough study of the essence of painting - the observation of the relationship of forms and colors along with references to the universe of visual symbols.
The opening of the exhibition was accompanied by a conversation attended by Krzysztof Klimek and Prof. Andrzej Szarek, Prof. Jerzy Fober, Prof. Dariusz Jurus and - the audience.
